John – I actually looked this one up on Google after Mike told the story because it was so bizarre! It actually happened and is well documented. Anyway, the best metaphors are real because it’s much easier to be congruent in the delivery. A big part of what makes metaphors work is the congruent delivery. That said, it’s perfectly fine to craft metaphors for change to suit the situation. I do this with kids quite often. Draw on personal experience, and adjust the story to elicit the change you want to create.
